    Hi, Alex
I find pruning is a very interesting idea for grid trading because it will decrease chance to blow up an account during strong trending market. I definitely will incorporate it into my trading. One another possibility is to open a hedge position instead of close some of losing deals if not sure there is strong trend is in place. thanks again for your sharing.

    Hi Alex

I have a question. Is it possible to change the lot size traded while the EA is running or would you have to close down all trades reset lot size and start again?

  3. al spicer

Seems the EA should be able to choose the most volatile pair to trade and have you looked at what the eFibo Trader can do?

  4. James

Is this EA 100% fully automated trading ea? Or it is semi-automated trading ea?

+ Which pairs does it work well on?

    + Max drawdown so far?

    + Winning trade %?

Thanks for your information and advice.

    Regards,

    James

It works well currencies trading is a small range of say 300 to 500 pips. You drawdown will depend in your the setting you use and your account size etc. In general the non directional method is hedged so drawdowns are probably 50% less that they would normally be. Winning rates tend to be over 90%.

    Idea to reduce risk
    ———————–
    1. Delete all transaction when certain target of equity is reach. Eg: like every USD500 , it will close all transaction.
Let say you start with USD4000 and your target profit is USD500. So when equity reach USD4500 , you delete all transaction and start all over again. When deleting all transaction, delete from the newest transaction to oldest transaction if you plan to write EA to delete the transaction.
Profit will be slower, but you will be able to follow the trend nicely with reduce drawdown.

    2. On daily basis pruning when total transactions reach a level , prune the bigger leg.. Example : Let say you set total trimming target is 24.
At the end of day, when total buy is 25 and total sell is 5, Total is 33 and it is greater than 24. So it find the bigger buy leg which is 25 and prune 6 transaction (oldest transaction) so that it left 19 .
    19 (buy) +5 (sell) = 24.
and let the Ea run again until the next pruning.
Drawdown will be lower, with medium profit.

Idea to trim leg without closing in negative .
    ————————————————-
Another idea to trim the unbalance leg (outermost leg) is using martingle method. Example when you reach 15 level at one leg (sell) and you would like to trim the last 5 transaction (oldest) . You have have another process , open a sell transaction example like 1.5 times of the total Lot size of the last 5 transaction (0.5 Lot * 1.5 if your 5 transaction above is 0.1 Lot ) . This transaction must be at some criteria reversal fibo point like 61.8%, 121.7 or 161.8% with minimum profit which able to break even with the last 5 transaction. It this fail, wait for another Fibo point with 1.5 times last open lot size (1.5* (0.5*1.5) ) again.. until you able to cancel of the last 5 transactions.
Note that , the Non GTM will still be running , which that you have another additional process running to trim the outer most level.

    Cheers,
    Philip

Some good ideas – be careful of overmanagement as the Multiplier may not reach its full potential

    Alex

As a possible way to reduce losses with the non-directional grid, have you considered opening a directional grid once price reaches one of the boundaries of the non-directional grid (ie. the 500-700 pip range that would result in a margin call.)

This new directional grid would provide a partial hedge and help offset the loss on the non-directional grid if price keeps on trending.

If price reverses upon opening the directional grid (and you get a margin call on it) you should make up for it with the profits on the non-directional grid as price will have retraced back into the previous range thus booking profit on a lot of the older orders.

    Just my random thoughts!

  12. Alex du Plooy Post author

Good idea worth think about – just remember you might have 30 trades against the trend – 1 or 2 with the trend trades will not really help.

  13. chad

    Ahh, good point.

So what about starting the directional grid a little earlier like once price reaches 65-70% of one of the boundaries.

Also, since this is a hedge, you could be more aggressive with it so you could use smaller gap sizes which should be more profitable.

You did mention the directional grid is more profitable than the non-directional version so there may be something in it – I’ll have to test this out for sure.

Bought and started the EA right before Tallinex started to update their servers last week… So I went on to trade testing on Alpari.
Just an idea to point your EA into the right direction:
    On your 1 Hour Gold/USD chart : add RSI (14), Stochastic (14,5,5).
When your RSi crosses the bottom line (30), confirm your entry with stochastic when the red line also cross its (20) line on the way up. Set your EA to Buy and let it roll.
1 day – 4 or 5 days later, the RSi will cross again the top part (70). Close all open trades and put in Sell trades on you EA. confirm your direction change by waiting for the red line of the Stochastic to cross down over the 80 level.
The reason for gold – I find the RSi tops and bottoms is more reliable than in other currencies. It does bounce maybe two times, but the multiplier effect works great with that! Any Ideas?
Also, gold runs like crazy and pip spread is hi, but could be worth it.
For now – I’m getting the buy and sell testing behind me to see how it works. Ran it from Wednesday, 3 September 2014, 1:500 trading demo account. $5000 start. 0.1 lots. Buy and sell. 13 pip take profit. So far $5746 Balance, Equity $5546, $199 in open trades.

Note also : Last week Monday when tallinex was unavailable, I started to run EUR/JPY, it being the ‘best’ according to results from developers. and overnight, the buy leg did not do any trades while the sell leg worked. not good. Glitch somehow but is working great and without any problems for the last few days.

Anyone wants to share an honest opinion of their experience and results with GTM? Great EA and its a tool that must be used correctly. And practical knowledge beats theory every time!

Great discussion – The problem with momentum indicators is that they are not guaranteed to move from the oversold to the overbought environments all the time. In a strongly trending market they will get stuck in the overbought or oversold environments. The trick is sometimes to move the overbought and oversold levels dynamically. So in an upward trending market the oversold could be at 45 an the overbought at 95. This will give you more chance of trading momentum in a trending environment.

Test your system on the EURUSD or the AUDJPY over the last 3 to 8 weeks. The GTM could be gold if pointed in the right direction when trading the single direction technique. Other variations could be lots sizing of buy and sell legs.

Please contact EAFactory with any technical problems or look in the log for reasons why trades did not activate.

    Thank you!
Think I found the problem. Between “out of range” and connection problems with data centre, trades was not done.
Today it was from balance up to $6100 en Equity around $5800, to Balance 5055 tonight..! but yes, the EA responds perfect en worked perfect, the fault was mine. I still need to learn to use my new shiny tool with respect and knowledge!
Still sorting out the strategy tester though. Does not want to work with the EA! eafocs.dll problem and so! will try and sort it out as soon as possible.
I understand what you are saying about the momentum problem in a trend (Working and relying on RSI). Is there an indicator you would use as confirmation? I’m trying to use Stochastic 14, 5, 5. but yes, in a trend… The trend thing has never been my friend. Changes when you are not expecting it. Dodge and dive like trying to catch a dog that thinks its playtime!
    Thanks for the reply!
